Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club Surprises 2019 Durham County Teacher of the Year for National Teacher Day
Mika Twietmeyer was shocked when a few unexpected guests stopped by her classroom at Riverside High School
DURHAM, N.C., May 7, 2019 – Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, the premier AAA Four Diamond luxury inn and golf club located on the campus of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, treated the 2019 Durham County Teacher of the Year with a complimentary stay at the property and breakfast in the Vista Restaurant in honor of National Teacher Day.
Representative from the property arrived at Riverside High School yesterday and were accompanied by Riverside High School’s principal, Tonya Williams, to Mika Twietmeyer’s classroom, where her fourth period class was coming to a close. As the guests entered, Mika was clearly taken aback, transitioning from surprised to humbled by the recognition, while her students applauded their hardworking teacher.
“On this special day, we want to make teachers feel truly appreciated for all that they do,” said Jack Schmidt, area director of sales and marketing, Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club. “We know how tirelessly the teachers in our communities work and how much of an impact they make on the next generation of leaders. We are proud to not only support but actively thank Mika and all of our Durham teachers!”
Per the Durham Public Schools site, the science and biology teacher was named 2019 Durham County Teacher of the Year for her service and success in the classroom. She has been at Riverside her entire decade‐long teaching career.
Mika first entered the classroom because of her love of science and was excited to develop creative ways to bring authentic science experiences to the classroom, different from what students had experienced in the past. Now, midway through her career, she is motivated by her students, her interest in improving her teaching ability and adapting to teach specific students and providing support and leadership for beginning teachers.
