Hospitality powerhouse Daniel Lotz named North Carolina’s top lodging operator in NCRLA ‘Stars of the Industry’ awards
A veteran executive of the renowned Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, Lotz was celebrated at an event spotlighting hospitality talent across the state
DURHAM, N.C. (February 25, 2025) – The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, a distinctive AAA Four Diamond hotel property located on Duke University's campus, announced that General Manager Daniel Lotz has been recognized as “Lodging Operator of the Year” by the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association (NCRLA). The NCRLA presented Lotz with the award at its Stars of the Industry Awards ceremony yesterday – an event celebrating the exemplary contributions of trailblazers moving the needle in the state’s hospitality sector.
Lotz first arrived at the Inn more than 20 years ago, and during his celebrated tenure, he has played a pivotal role in establishing its reputation as one of the region’s premier hotels. In 2024 Lotz led a transformative renovation of the Inn’s signature suites and its AAA Four Diamond Fairview Dining Room, collaborating with local artisans to honor the property’s nearly 40-year history and reflect the natural beauty of Durham and Duke University.
“Daniel has perfected the art of delivering exceptional service while fostering unwavering trust within his team,” said Randy Kolls, co-managing partner and managing director of the family of hotels owned by Duke University. “Under Daniel’s, the Inn has become a vibrant destination for both visitors and locals, earning numerous 'Best Hotel' distinctions and maintaining its prestigious Four Diamond rating for nearly two decades.”
With a steadfast commitment to enriching the overall guest experience, Daniel was also instrumental in launching weekly programs such as Saturday Morning Yoga, the Flashback Flicks outdoor movie series and Saturday Evening Stargazing in collaboration with the Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society (CHAOS).
“We are thrilled to honor the incredible talent, resilience and innovation of North Carolina’s hospitality professionals,” said Lynn Minges, president and CEO of NCRLA. “This amazing group of individuals and organizations consistently go above and beyond to drive our industry forward, even in the face of challenges.”
Daniel has a rich background in training, leading and motivating service-oriented guest services staff, bringing a wealth of experience from roles at The Steigenberger Parkhotel in Düsseldorf, Germany and Ritz-Carlton properties in Arizona and Florida. He is an active member of the NCRLA Foundation Board, the philanthropic arm of the NCRLA.
The NCRLA is the voice of North Carolina’s restaurant, foodservice and lodging industry. Seventeen outstanding individuals and organizations across ten categories were recognized during the NCRLA awards ceremony based on their exemplary service, leadership, innovation and dedication to the industry. The full list of award winners is available to view on the NCRLA website.
